Implementing Article 6 - An Overview of Preparations in Selected Countries

In the period since the rulebook for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement was adopted in November 2021, many governments have begun to take steps towards national implementation. However, with only a handful of full frameworks in place across the world, it can be difficult to understand the state of preparations and latest developments in individual countries.

With this in mind, we are pleased to share a new report presenting information on the latest status of Article 6 preparations in 20 countries as of April 2023. The countries studied are among the most important past suppliers of carbon credits, and most host significant numbers of certified Gold Standard activities. The detailed factsheets summarise preparations in each featured country, showing that preparations to implement Article 6 are progressing in a wide variety of countries, with a significant geographical diversity. In particular, many African countries are actively pursuing efforts to enable their participation.

As a whole, the report reflects the broad international interest in adopting new legal frameworks, procedures and infrastructure for Article 6, and that action is being taken in many places. However, there is still some way to go globally, and the report also highlights the importance of continued support from international partners and development organisations to help facilitate broad participation in Article 6, including through technical assistance and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange.

This report has been prepared by adelphi and is part of Gold Standard’s Article 6 Early Mover Programme, supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany (BMWK).
