One Earth, a forthcoming journal for high-quality research that seeks to understand and address today’s environmental grand challenges, has partnered with Gold Standard, a standards body that certifies initiatives that support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Together, they will offset three tons of carbon emissions for every research paper the journal publishes. The first issue of One Earth, from publisher Cell Press, will appear online on September 20, 2019. This partnership was inspired in part through conversations between One Earth editors and the research community. It became clear that the journal’s prospective authors live their science; it determines not only their professional path but also their lifestyle, environmental ethics, and day-to-day decisions.
“We recognize that our authors are conscious of their environmental footprint and conducting science can sometimes compromise these values,” says Lewis Collins, the Editor-in-Chief of One Earth. “I am delighted that through partnering with Gold Standard we are able to offset some of the unavoidable emissions associated with the work leading to the papers we publish and support the transition to a low-carbon society.”
The carbon offsetting efforts Gold Standard certifies work by allowing individuals and organizations to contribute financially to projects that reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Through investing in Gold Standard certified projects, One Earth, on behalf of its authors, can play an active role in mitigating against climate change, in addition to the scientific impact of the research published in the journal.
