Methodology for reducing methane emissions from cattle through direct conversion of methane

  • Consultation Period 24 Feb 2025 - 26 Mar 2025
  • Submission Deadline 26 Mar 2025
  • Scope Activity Climate Action
Livestock_methane-conversion consultation Cover

The methodology focuses on capturing methane emissions from cattle (produced by enteric fermentation) and converting them on-site into gases with lower Global Warming Potentials (e.g., CO2). Typically, the system used includes methane capture and conversion units, which will typically include devices worn by an animal.

The approach must comply with the Gold Standard’s Principles and Requirements, particularly regarding animal health, welfare, and management, as well as any relevant national or regional animal care standards.

Gold Standard is inviting stakeholder comments on the draft methodology. Apart from the overall feedback on the methodology, we also also invite feedback on the following two areas:

1. Whether this methodology should allow the use of other relevant methodologies in combination, such as the Gold Standard methodology for anaerobic digestion of manure, or if there should be restrictions on combining methodologies.

2. The methodology allows for Certification Renewal once after the first 5 year crediting period. Renewal of certification shall follow Gold Standard for the Global Goals certification renewal requirements, for example, the assessment of Eligibility Criteria, methodology related parameters, Re-definition of Baseline Scenario  etc . We welcome feedback on the crediting period length and the certification renewal requirements.
