Introduction

Originally, a revision to methodology ACM0005: Increasing the blend in cement production was initiated by Gold Standard, with a view to include the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) component within the existing CDM methodology. The proposed revision to the methodology would allow the inclusion of additives that are comprised of and/or are enhanced with waste or captured carbon dioxide (CO2), and greenhouse gas reductions can be counted from the CO2 mineralised into the additives or directly into the cement. The additives can be manufactured and mineralised with CO2 at the location of the cement plant or off-site.

However, following deliberation with experts, we see the opportunity to integrate the CCUS component with other relevant methodologies as well. Therefore, we are exploring if keeping CCUS component as a separate module would be more useful than including it in ACM0005. In this case, a separate module on CCUS component could be used independently or in conjunction with relevant methodologies.

The original CDM Methodology ACM0005 remains approved as it exists, while new text of the methodology (for carbon mineralisation component) may be published as a separate and independent Gold Standard methodology in its own right. The carbon mineralisation component could also be taken up as a module that can be plugged in to a relevant methodology.

We take this opportunity to ask for stakeholder feedback on the CCUS component included in ACM0005, thus keeping the current version as such, for public consultation. Accordingly, stakeholders are requested to give feedback on keeping the original CDM methodology left unchanged and publishing a new Gold Standard methodology.

Revisions are highlighted in blue in the document.
