Reviewing a pilot methodology for avoided emissions from reduced food waste - (individuals)

  • Deadline Nov 2, 2024 at 16:59 (European Central Time GMT+1:00)
  • Scope Activity Climate Action

The emissions from food loss and waste arise not only from the energy and resources used to produce food that goes uneaten but also from methane released when food decomposes in fields or landfills.

Gold Standard recognises over 200 impact quantification methodologies as eligible under GS4GG, many of which have been developed by Gold Standard in consultation with a developer or external consultancy. In 2024, Gold Standard, along with an independent consultant, has developed a first draft of a methodology for avoided emissions from reduced food loss and waste.

To ensure that additions to the standard follow a consistent and robust process in line with ISEAL Code of Good Practice and remains impartial, the methodology will need to be reviewed by an independent group of 2 to 3 experts before the final draft of the methodology is released for public consultation.

The expert reviewers will review the current draft methodology titled: pilot methodology for Avoided Emissions from Reduced Food Loss and Waste. This review will include a full assessment of the proposed methodology, including but not limited to ensuring the below are both complete (i.e., no missing components) and correct (e.g., data sources are all correctly referenced):

i) Emissions included in the baseline and project activities

ii) All calculations for baseline, project, and leakage emissions

iii) All data parameters for monitoring (both ex-ante and ex-post)

The reviewer will have the following skills and experience:

i) At least 5 years expertise in Carbon Accounting and Impact Quantification Methods: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in carbon accounting principles, emission reduction and impact quantification methodologies, and related standards Climate Security and Sustainable Development 5

ii) Understanding of Food Waste Management: Familiarity with food waste prevention strategies, food supply chains, food lifecycle analysis, and related environmental impacts.

iii) Previous experience with reviewing impact quantification methodologies: Proven track record of reviewing or developing methodologies for calculating emission reductions or quantifying impact across the other SDGs.

Closing date of the application process is 02nd November 2024.
